Flip through Shadowman #1 (1992) — one of the earliest supernatural titles from the original Valiant Comics line under Jim Shooter.
Written by Steve Englehart with are by David Lapham (Stray Bullets), this debut issue brings mysticism, New Orleans atmosphere, and grounded superhero storytelling into a universe that was exploding with tightly controlled continuity. While Image Comics was redefining flash and spectacle in 1992, Valiant was doing something very different — deliberate world-building, disciplined plotting, and character-first drama.
Was Shadowman just another “dark 90s” book?
Or was it something smarter?
If you’re a longtime Valiant fan, a Bronze-to-Modern era reader, or just Shadowman-curious from later relaunches or video game appearances — this is a great place to revisit the character’s origins.
