CFD method: SPH

Description: SPH stands for Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics; it is a continuum based discrete element method that uses particles to simulate the behavior of materials. Due to its dynamic structure SPH is often used to simulate fluids. However it can also be used to simulate solids. To illustrate this we have created a benchmark SPH simulation about a bullet impacting a steel plate. The plate has a thickness of 14.3 mm. The bullet, a 338 Winchester Magnum A-frame hunting bullet, impacts the plate with an initial velocity of 842 m/s. The results of the simulation were compared to experimental results. The overall difference was less than five percent.

Purpose: The simulation shows that SPH can also be used to simulate impact on solid materials.

This is an analysis in which is simulated using the SPH CFD method from Altair Radioss. The analysis was performed by Femto Engineering for research and promotion purposes. More information: www.femto.nl
