Description: Observations are among the most visible types of needs analysis for teacher development run in schools. This talk explores the development of an observation instrument and how it was linked to eventual classroom impacts desired from a development programme. The development included designing the instrument and related descriptors of classroom practice, standardising and piloting, and interpretation and utilisation of results to feed a year-long development programme. During the talk, consideration will also be given to current research into observation, particularly from mainstream education, to benchmark this development against current best practice.
