The Exaltation of the Holy Cross is associated with the end of the persecution of Christians, with the advent of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Constantine did as he was advised and was able to defeat the enemy. After this, he declared the Christian faith to be paramount. He instructed his mother, Queen Helena, to find the place where Jesus was crucified and the Cross buried. They wanted to build a temple on this spot. Queen Helena made great efforts to find the right place. When she finally succeeded, after lengthy excavations, three crosses came to light. On the bishop's advice, they began presenting each cross to a seriously ill woman. Two crosses made no difference. When they presented the third cross, the woman was instantly healed. Thus, the Lord's Cross was recognized.
