There could be various ways to differentiate between the three basic modes of heat transfer but while solving problems it might get difficult to figure out which mode of heat transfer is happening in the given situation so the best route is to understand the underlying phenomenon. And to understand it we need to finalise a list of parameters which will help us study the three modes of heat transfer.

The parameters are:

Movement of fluid involved or not
Law governing the process
What leads to heat transfer?
Which entities such as electron, proton, phonon, molecules, atoms are involved in the heat transfer?
