Undertale is a 2015 2D role-playing video game created by American indie developer Toby Fox. The player controls a child who has fallen into the Underground: a large, secluded region under the surface of the Earth, separated by a magical barrier. The player meets various monsters during the journey back to the surface, although some monsters might engage the player in a fight. The combat system involves the player navigating through mini-bullet hell attacks by the opponent. They can opt to pacify or subdue monsters in order to spare them instead of killing them. One prime example of this is Flowey, who, normally shown as being an antagonist in Undertale, actually wants to help the protagonist escape the Underground safely.[4] It presents a universe where the Underground monsters are darker versions of their originals. Some fans refer to these characters with 'Nega' as a prefix to differentiate from canon. Sans (/sænz/) is the brother of Papyrus and a major character in Undertale. He first appears in Snowdin Forest after the protagonist exits the Ruins. He serves as a supporting character in the Neutral and True Pacifist routes, and as the final boss and heroic antagonist in the Genocide Route.

The Batter is the main protagonist and the playable character of the game. He has no talk voice, possibly implying his silent nature. He is determined to purify the zones of the world and will let no obstacle stand in his way. Although he is sentient and aware that he is a puppet being controlled by a person playing a game, he appears to think and feel independently - but he hardly ever shares his emotions or opinions. He takes on a relatively monstrous form during the Special Ending of OFF. This change, however, is merely the perspective of The Judge/Player and not a physical transformation.
