This talk summarizes the steps we took to test, detect and solve a performance issue where SQL queries in Oracle suddenly, out of the blue, consumed way more CPU and dragged down the performance and end-user experience of a web based application.
Performance Engineering is complex. Performance Engineers may tend to focus on the application tier but often a performance bottleneck occurs in the data tier. This talk describes an issue we detected for a tier one business application in an Oracle database. Oracle is the most used RDBMS for enterprises. Every new release, Oracle adds amazing features with great focus on performance and stability to make your applications running like a swiss clock. Or not…. Be careful with any feature which contains auto, self-healing, machine learning, … These features can lead to the stairway to heaven or spiral you downwards towards the devil. You may end up like a one-hit wonder.
