abstract
The question is why suddenly make a video of a 4-5 year old lens , well canon efs 10-18mm is stm can also be used with your canon eos m50 , canon eos r , canon eos rp, canon 90d . it is the most affordable wide angle lens with the sharpest of edges by canon. yes it is not fast as a usm lens. Thus it makes us think how good is it for budget filmmaking and video work?
This video was silently lying around in one of my hard drives, it was a practice footage , back in the days of 2018 when i was figuring out to go for photography or more videography, the canon efs 10-18 is stm is all i had with a canon 80d body, 4k was the minimum requirement that time to get into filmmaking and short film production. but i was not ready , so i practiced 3 days every week , while my friend used to play , i used to film them.
dji spark had just launched , and i was fortunate enough to collect my money and buy the spark, and wola my 1080p gear was ready , knowing little 4k is the way to go.
canon 10-18 efs is stm being wide required very little effort to keep all the players in frame, handheld the image stabalization with an l - bracket was pretty darn good.
but cranking that iso of my age old workhorse , canon 80d, which i let go last year, and i switched to sony, revealed lot of light and color noise.
well noise as life progressed , and i started learning to work with a non linear editor , was not a big deal in videos.as it could be corrected.
the only problem that was for me was the light reflection that was hitting the sensor in a very different pattern, compensating the contrast in video. i am a big fan of light reflections, and i think it adds a lot of effect in video work . but the pattern of reflection did make me think.
For photography in the morning and evening this lens was awesome , but video which i ultimately chose the route i had occasional hiccups.
f4.5-f5.6 though might be bad for lowlight on the contrary lot of us we shoot f8-f12 in weddings , to bring as many people in groups as possible.
so for video work this lens requires good lighting conditions.
for streetstyle video work , this might be good as content is more important ,but for professional work prime lenses hold the key.
Overall the canon efs 10-18mm is stm. is a lens that is very sharp along the edges compared to tokina 11-18 f2.8 the motors are silent , so no noise in, on camera external video.
i have treasured this lens for the past 5 years , before i got robbed 1 year before while doing a canon m50 low light test , where my gear was robbed at 11:30 pm....
missing the lens ? yes . will i buy it again? probably no. as i now have the sigma 18-35mm f1.8 not stable but with my blackmagic pocket cinema 6k does a fantastic job.
