It's 2 AM. A nurse calls — patient hasn't had a bowel movement in 3 days. What do you order?
Most residents reach for the wrong laxative. Here's the 5-step framework I use on every patient to prevent the call from happening in the first place.
In this video I walk through every inpatient laxative — bulking agents, stool softeners, osmotic agents, saline laxatives, stimulants, and enemas — with exact doses, speed of onset, and when to use each. I also cover magnesium precautions in renal failure and how to avoid accidentally causing diarrhea.
This is part of the First Week of Residency Tips series — the practical stuff nobody teaches you on day one.
