Side operation to the Ford 8N Won’t Start – Troubleshooting video.
When I tested the charger it came on and hummed, but it wasn’t putting out more than 1 or 2 volts of DC. The 12 volt tractor battery has to have at least 12 volts DC to charge.
So I took the battery charger apart.
I poked and prodded around inside to see if I could find any burnt or damaged parts. No signs of damage just a bunch of dust.
I probed the circuit with the Amprobe analog multimeter and found that the voltage right from the transformer was 1 or 2 volts AC. That’s not right.
Then I snapped the switch to the 50 amp setting and the meter shot to 12 volts.
Back to 10 amps and only 1 volt.
I snapped the switch back and forth and it started working.
Dirt was the problem.
