British physicist Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76.
____
Hawking gained widespread recognition after the publication of his popular science book "A Brief History of Time" in April 1988. It has been translated into dozens of languages and has sold over 10 million copies.
The scientist also devoted considerable attention to pressing human issues such as global warming, the environment, and social inequality.
Hawking's most important scientific result was his description of black hole radiation. He hypothesized that low-mass black holes lose energy by emitting radiation across their event horizons and eventually "die."
