New project! Episode 1.
Radioactive materials - radioactive lenses. Thorium-glass optics.

This video, part of a project about radiation, is dedicated to a radioactive material: a radioactive lens.

Optical mechanisms become radioactive thanks to the radioactive element thorium, a heavy, slightly radioactive metal. Such optics were produced until the 1950s, but thorium was subsequently replaced by the less radioactive lanthanum.

The video also discusses the characteristic features of radioactive lenses. For example, a thorium glass lens gives the lens a slight yellow tint. This yellowing effect is well known to professional photographers. Background radiation levels are significantly elevated, around 3000 µR/h. Storing thorium lenses in Russia and Ukraine is prohibited and can cause significant problems at the airport when crossing the border with such a camera.

The video also provides advice on storing and using radioactive lenses. Regarding health risks, storing thorium lenses is safe and poses no radiation hazard. Theoretical assumptions about possible cataracts with prolonged use of such radioactive lenses have not been confirmed in practice.

Also, for "radiation hunters," a list of lens names containing radioactive glass is provided.
