Photocollages are EXTREMELY nice to do in Inkscape, you just need to draw a shape of what you want to cut out and make it 100% white, no transparency. Then you select both the shape and t he image (an imported image, most likely PNG or JPG) and use Object/Clip/Set (don't use mask or else it will have an awkward outline).
The best thing about this is: you can undo this like nothing! I completely stopped using GIMP for collages after I realized this technique exists! Too bad color correction is not as nice in Inkscape though. This requires me sometimes to use both rather than just Inkscape. If you have suggestions for other software on Linux, please let me know!
