Have you noticed an application on your device called Android System SafetyCore?
If so, there's nothing to be alarmed about, as it's actually part of a new collection of Safety features rolling out by Google itself.
What is Android System SafetyCore?
If you look at the application page for Android System SafetyCore, it will tell you that it is a system service that provides safety features for Android devices.
And while that is an accurate description, it doesn't really tell you much about what it does.
However, there's a document provided by Google that goes into more detail.
On this page, we're told that the Android System SafetyCore application is an Android system component that provides privacy-preserving on-device user protection infrastructure for apps.
We're also told that it powers a new feature called Sensitive Content Warnings.
And this was actually announced during Cybersecurity Awareness Month
What does Android System SafetyCore do?
It's designed to help give you more control over sending and receiving images that contain nudity.
When the feature is enabled, it will scan images that are being sent to you for nudity.
If the app detects an image does contain this type of content, then the image will be blurred out and you'll have the option to bypass that protection by consenting.
Google calls this a speed bump, and you'll get a similar notice if you try to send an image that contains this type of content as well.
This seems to be a feature that will be implemented into the Google Messages application, but there also information that says the app will be available on Google TV as well. So we could see this feature become available to Android as a whole.
Which would allow multiple apps to leverage this Android system component for those types of added protections.

Conclusion
This is an early look at a feature that is actively being built by developers over at Google.
The UI is still being worked on, so we don't know exactly how this feature will be enabled or disabled, but we have been told that it will roll out to devices running Android 9 or higher.
So if you're seeing this app on your smartphone, tablet or smart TV, then you now know why.
And if you begin to see intimate images blurred out with a new prompt about consenting, then this is the app that's powering that new feature.
It's smart that Google will have this feature run entirely on the device. So no images will be sent to the cloud for analysis.
I could actually see this being a highly used feature for parents who are helping guide their children through the internet instead of just blocking access entirely.
So I suspect this will be baked into Android's Family Link package as well.
