As NATO member states emerged one by one in European countries in the early 1990s, it was expected that Turkey, the most critical country in the Cold War, would face a similar reckoning. In 1996, a traffic accident occurred. A Mercedes crashed in Susurluk, carrying a member of parliament, a police chief, and Abdullah Çatlı, the renowned nationalist leader of the 1970s who was wanted under a red notice. At Çatlı's funeral ceremony in Nevşehir a few days later, a leaflet, the author of which was unknown, was distributed:
"For years, our country has been in a covert war. Çatlı took sides in this war. He didn't just take sides; he took risks and paid the price. He fought like a sword, lived an honorable life. He walked towards God." Whether Abdullah Çatlı, who allegedly fought like a sword, was a man of the deep state was never officially declared. But the word chosen was quite telling. "Kılıç" is the Italian word for "Gladio."
