The Leonel Viera Bridge, popularly known as La Barra Bridge or Wavy Bridge, is a Uruguayan highway bridge that crosses the Maldonado stream, thus allowing communication between the spa cities of El Tesoro and Punta del Este. The purpose of this bridge was to reduce speed.
Martínez, first owner of the La Barra hotel, La Posta del Cangrejo, would have convinced the then Uruguayan president Eduardo Víctor Haedo to build a bridge that would connect that town with Punta del Este.
It was inaugurated in 1965. It is a work of the Uruguayan builder Leonel Viera
It was a daring and particular construction project, carried out using the tensioned belt system, and where its board exerts traction. Crossing it quickly generates vertigo in those who pass through it.
In 1999, another bridge was built parallel to this one, immediately upstream of it (only 20 meters away), which is crossed via Eduardo Víctor Haedo Avenue. The designer of this second bridge was Engineer Alberto Ponce Delgado. Its construction was awarded in 1998, and it was built as a twin of the original. The latter showed some deterioration, so in 1999 a study of its condition was commissioned, which indicated that its structure should be repaired, which was done in 2005.
