Today, come with me to Milan. We will visit corners of the city, and I will tell you why I love this city and why I would recommend to all of you to live it for some time.
Don't ask me why, but as people say, for me it was love at first sight. Milan is a city that youngsters and small-town youngsters should experience for a few months.
One should really breathe the air of Milan, which is not so bad. I experienced Milan from 2011 to 2017, and especially in preparation for the EXPO, it truly transformed itself as a city and named best city in 2019 ahead of places like Shanghai and Helsinki. It is indeed an Italian city that can rival many European capitals and has been defined by journalists as a small London. It is a city to live, a model of development in Italy and Europe.
Milan has always been the centre of economic activity, and companies and big European investors choose to locate in the city, creating many opportunities and relations.
Milan moves fast, the people go fast. Do not think you can just sit back along the streets of Milan. If you really want to relax go for a casual stroll in one of the many parks.
Milan is very green. If you are in Milan's downtown, however, leave room for the people running to work. Cross the street, fast. I remember still my first time here, I was still halfway and everyone else already crossed. The traffic lights dictate the time, we have ten seconds.
Public transports are very organized: four metro lines, many expanding and a fifth being built, and buses, trams, and taxis. And if that's not enough, you can enjoy all that Milan is sharing: cars, bikes, and since this year even electric scooters.
Milan never stops, and you can do all of this from an app on your phone, telling you how to go from A to B, and apps for sharing.
It takes just a moment to get all you need, anywhere you are. Milan is definitely well connected, and as the best design magazines tell us, Milan is living its second renaissance. Booming new constructions, nothing left to chance and with an eye to the future, with a focus on what is environmentally friendly, energetically efficient, as shown by the first of its kind Bosco Verticale, behind us.
I would avoid talking about food and compete with my own region, Piedmont. However, I must say that in Milan you can find food from Lombardy if you want, but also any other place in the world, and satisfy any craving you might have.
There are many international restaurants and food from all around the world, in every corner of the city you can find a place that will bring you on a journey.
But Milan is not just work. Milan is also culture, books, shows and exhibitions. Certainly, the most famous events that make Milan famous everywhere are the Fashion Week and the Salone del Mobile. I have to say I love to lose myself in the streets of old Brera where for a few years the Fuori Salone has been taking place, and entire apartments and backyards are set up. In many ways it is worth even just come to Milan for a week, and be carried away by the design.
Among the many opportunities Milan has to offer, of course, there are many educational opportunities, a city in which young people can find their call and future.
I could go on for hours, but I think it is time to end this tour of Milan. And some of you may be asking how can it all be so nice and working fine. Well, it is not, and for sure Milan has some flaws. The cost of living is definitely high, and Milan is hectic and expensive: rents, groceries, day life and nightlife.
Some say the weather is not so nice, however, I might have been lucky but I have never seen the infamous fog. I have always been welcomed by the sun. Certainly, it cannot always be this nice, especially during cold winter days, but it's never nice when cold anyway.
Another issue with Milan is the traffic, of course. But we know that there will be traffic where there is business, finance, cultural and work exchanges.
Are you convinced? If not, I will bring you to a sacred place for the people of Milan, and tell you about the sacred ritual of the aperitivo.
We are on the Navigli, another place worth your while. Vibrant with life, young people, and languages from all around the world. The Navigli also beautifully transformed for the EXPO.
That is all for today, I hope I conveyed my enthusiasm for this city, and mentioned the cost of living here but also the culture, the work and relational opportunities that this place has to offer. So for the last time, Milan is worth experiencing for some time, it opens your mind to new and future perspectives. As the people here would say, see you in Duomo!
