What happens when a global crisis completely shuts down middle eastern airspace, and your direct flight home to London vanishes?
Flying on airline staff travel (ID90) is an incredible perk that offers up to 90% off tickets—including premium cabins like business class. However, the golden rule of non-rev travel is that you are NEVER confirmed.
When the war started, Middle Eastern carriers had to halt routes. Commercial passengers took immediate priority on all alternative routes, completely filling every flight from traditional Asian hubs like Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Taipei back to Europe. Stranded in Bali and facing commercial tickets through China upwards of £4,000, I had to do something completely insane: circumnavigate the globe to get home.
Join me on an epic, 8-day standby rescue mission across the Pacific Ocean. From tracking the Qantas standby queue app in Sydney, to getting bumped from Fiji Airways, navigating a surprise detour to Hawaii, pulling a standby ticket on American Airlines, and finally trying to catch a British Airways Club World business class seat out of San Francisco (SFO) back to London Heathrow (LHR).
✈️ The Absurd Standby Route:
Kuala Lumpur (KUL) & Bali (DPS) ➡️ Stranded
Qantas Economy ➡️ Sydney (SYD)
Stranded in Sydney ➡️ Flying to the US Islands
Qantas Economy ➡️ Honolulu, Hawaii (HNL)
Hawaiian Airlines / American Airlines ➡️ San Francisco (SFO)
British Airways Club World (Business Class) ➡️ London Heathrow (LHR)
