My BEST Lutz prep for correcting bad lutz in ice skating. Figure skater lutz tutorial exercise.

If you have trouble with a clean edge take off have a go at this excersize. This was a lot to squeeze into 1 minute so I’m doing a longer version of this on YouTube soon and will explain more detail below:

This lutz prep will help you feel:

✅ The right edge
✅ The right toe placement
✅ The weight transfer over the toe
✅ The counter rotation of the lutz
✅ How the toe rotates on takeoff
✅ The direction of the jump
✅ And your balance over the blade!

It really is an all rounder before actually jumping.

Step 1: use a hockey circle for your backwards entry edge, face your shoulder out of the circle. As you lift up on the knee turn 2 x half revolution turns on your toes using the twist back with your shoulders (from facing out to neutral). Your toes and landing should roughly follow the path of the hockey circle line, if they don’t it can show up some direction errors!

Step 2. Cross the toes. Cross the second toe in front of the first toe this is done by opening your hip a little as you place it in the ice. The toes should be very light if you’ve come up onto them. You’ve balanced over them and you should feel you can walk slowly through this bit. This crossing trains your in air position on takeoff so you haven’t got to think about it!

Step 3. Use the same feeling as you take off using only ONE toe. So “TOE, TURN & CROSS, HOP” or just “TOE, CROSS, HOP” are the key trigger words as you go through the takeoff.

Hope it helps! How’s your lutz?
