Ulrich Mott (Christoph Waltz), an ambitious nobody, marries the wealthy widow, Elsa Brecht (Vanessa Redgrave). Although Mott is three decades younger than his wife, they join forces to dominate the political and social circles of Washington, D.C., throwing lavish parties at their Georgetown home. When Elsa is found dead just hours after a dinner party, Ulrich becomes the prime suspect, as Elsa's daughter, Amanda Brecht (Annette Bening), has always considered him a con man. Amanda begins her own investigation while Ulrich creates an increasingly elaborate charade to convince everyone of his innocence.
