In this video I test all the graphics settings options in The Ascent to determine which ones have the greatest impact to performance and visual quality. I don't arrive at a final "use these exact settings list" because everyone's GPU and framerate targets will be different, but I do give advice about which setting to focus on. Personally, I am using shadows and effects turned down to "high" and leaving everything else at ultra on my RTX 2070 which was the GPU used to benchmark the performance in the video.
Summary:
Shadows from Ultra to High gains a lot of FPS for very little visual difference. Medium makes no sense, low gains a lot more frames but is noticeable.
Effects to high gains a few frames and wasn't too noticeable. Going down to Low was very noticeable but also gained a lot of frames.
Most other settings like anti aliasing, post processing, textures, and view distance did not make as significant impacts to framerate in the scene tested.
As a last resort, you can gain a lot of frames by lowering the resolution scale, but this will be quite noticeable at lower settings. I'd try to stick to 80 or above and only use it at all if you can't get playable framerates with graphics settings you are otherwise happy with.
