So… I may or may not have panic-bought a 90s Focusrite Red 2 EQ because it was the end of the year and Uncle Sam was circling. 😂
In this video, Ben and I unbox what is either a genius 2-bus upgrade… or the most unnecessary piece of gear you can own in 2025. We crack open a vintage Focusrite Red Range 2 Dual Equalizer, talk about the glory days when Focusrite was ultra high-end boutique, and nerd out over quarter-inch thick aluminum faceplates, Carnhill transformers, bonding, shielding, and why this thing weighs as much as a small car.
We get into:
• The history of the Red Range (Red 2, Red 3, the legendary console, and that mythical Red 0 rack panel)
• Why hardware still is superior plugins (yes, we’re going there)
• Transformers, inductors, caps, and why analog EQ behaves weird when you push it
• Whether spending $1,600 on 1997 technology is brilliant… or delusional
Is hardware pointless in 2025?
Is this just expensive nostalgia?
Or is this the missing link in my 2-bus chain with the Neve Master Bus Processor?
Let’s find out.
If you love overbuilt gear, red anodized aluminum, and long-form audio nerd debates that absolutely no one asked for… you’re in the right place.
