The days of blaming all right-wing problems on the East are long gone. That much was clear at the latest with the Hessian state election last year. Now the European elections are coming up, and yet we're still worried about what might happen in East Germany. And old questions are resurfacing: How could it be that the end of an anti-fascist GDR was followed there by one of the worst right-wing and extremist outbreaks since 1945? What does this have to do with the (lack of) coming to terms with Nazi history? Did anti-fascist politics perhaps never work? And what does all this have to do with the current strength of a nationalist party? In the second live podcast of the loose 2024 season, Hadija and Max talk with Jens-Christian Wagner, the director of the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation, about coming to terms with the past and the end of the hope that Germany's history of violence has been successfully overcome.
