How to create web thumbnails using Export for Screens in Adobe® Illustrator® // Real life example
This project is a good example of how to use Adobe Illustrator Export for Screens to create multiple files for print and /or web. Export for Screens is a great way to control the file name, size, resolution and format. Here is an outline of the steps used in this video:
1. File, New (cmd + N), select appropriate tab and enter the size of your Artboard and number needed
2. In this example, I copied the art from my print layout into a web sized square thumbnail layout using Edit, Copy (cmd + C on Mac) / Paste (cmd + V on Mac) and Object, Group (cmd + G on Mac)
3. Resize art using the Transform panel with constrain dimensions lock icon enabled
4. Make sure the appropriate Artboard is selected and choose “Align to Artboard” to center your art
5. Repeat steps 2-4 until you have added all your art to the new Artboards
6. Use the Artboard tool (shift + O on Mac), or File, Document Setup, Edit Artboards to name each Artboard
7. File, Export, Export for Screens (opt + cmd + E on Mac) to export all (or selected) Artboards in a particular format, with options to add a prefix and suffix for better file naming
Best practice tip: align elements from one Artboard to another using Paste in Place.
