Replacing the pads on your Akai MPC 1000 can be a rewarding experience, breathing new life into your beloved sampler and giving you a fresh playing surface. The process itself isn't too complex, but it requires some patience and attention to detail. Here's a breakdown of the steps involved:
Preparation:
Gather your tools: You'll need a small Phillips screwdriver, a pair of tweezers (optional), and of course, your new pad kit. Popular choices include the MPCstuff Fat Pads Kit and the JJOS2XL Pad Fix Kit.

Backup your data: Just to be safe, make sure to back up any important projects or samples you have stored on your MPC 1000 before you start.
Clear your workspace: Find a clean, well-lit area to work in. You don't want any loose screws or components going missing!
Disassembly:
Power down and unplug your MPC 1000.
Remove the back panel: There are four screws on the back of the unit that hold the panel in place. Once you've removed them, gently lift the panel off.
Disconnect the ribbon cables: There are two ribbon cables connecting the pads to the main PCB. Carefully detach them using the small plastic tabs on the connectors.
Unscrew the pads: Each pad is secured with two Phillips screws. Unscrew them carefully and set the pads aside.
Pad Replacement:
Remove the old pad membranes: The old membranes are attached to the metal frame with adhesive. You can gently peel them off with your fingers or use a pair of tweezers if they're being stubborn.
Install the new pad membranes: Place the new membranes on the metal frame, making sure they're aligned correctly. Peel off the backing tape and press the membranes firmly into place.
Reattach the pads: Screw the pads back onto the metal frame using the two Phillips screws. Don't overtighten them!
Reassembly:
Reconnect the ribbon cables: Gently plug the ribbon cables back into their connectors on the main PCB. Make sure they're seated firmly.
Reattach the back panel: Screw the back panel back onto the unit using the four screws.
Power up your MPC 1000: Turn it on and test your new pads! You may need to calibrate them in the MPC's settings menu.
Additional Tips:
Take your time and don't rush the process.
Be careful not to damage the ribbon cables or the PCB.
