A detective, at the invitation of district police officer Semyon Pashkin, arrives in a village for a fishing trip and witnesses a scandal: local resident Irina Semenikhina, who is laying claim to the house of deceased pensioner Loginova under the will, is evicting Lelya Zotova, Loginova's granddaughter, from the house. It turns out that Semenikhina's chances in court are very high. The next day, an assistant on his way to see his boss finds Semenikhina dead in the woods. Meanwhile, district police officer Semyon Pashkin is attempting to conceal evidence from the crime scene that directly points to Lelya Zotova. The detective discovers that the motive for Semenikhina's murder was shared by Boris Deyev, the deceased's former lover, and Katerina Nikolaeva, the district police officer's jilted fiancée. Suddenly, the investigator anonymously receives irrefutable evidence against Lelya Zotova. But the detective continues to doubt her guilt and suspects that someone is trying to frame Lelya. It turns out that the entire scheme was masterminded by Lelya's husband, Andrei Zotov. Andrei adopted Lelya's child, whom she had fathered with the son of a wealthy businessman, and decided to become his sole guardian, sending his wife to prison.

Tatyana Berestova contacted the detective agency. She came to the city to study but failed to get into university. She works in a design studio and lives in a rented apartment. While Tanya was at work, someone broke into the apartment, ransacked it, and stole a laptop and 100,000 rubles. Tanya flatly refuses to go to the police, fearing the case will become public and her parents will discover that she didn't even try to enroll in the economics department, as they had hoped, but failed the creative competition for the architecture department. Detectives suspect two of Tatyana's acquaintances: her boyfriend, Nikolai Zlobin, with whom Tanya recently had a falling out and broke up, and designer Gleb Ryumin. During the investigation, the detectives discover that Nikolai himself, who had the keys to the apartment, took the laptop, and that his new girlfriend, Lena, vandalized it out of jealousy. However, both Nikolai and Lena claim they didn't take the money and weren't even aware of its existence. Gleb's innocence is soon confirmed, but now the detectives' suspicions turn to Maria, the alcoholic daughter of Tanya's landlady. On the Chief's orders, his assistants place Maria under surveillance, and the detectives soon manage to expose her, proving that it was Maria who broke into the apartment and stole the money.
