Welcome to Dev Odyssey Network Security!

With data privacy at its utmost concern to date, this video gives you an idea on how a consumer grade wireless network is have improved their security. This video is the sequel to “Your Router Is Not Secure”, meant highlight the new features of modern day routers, to contrast the pitfalls of these routers, and explain why yours should be up to date.

First video: “Your Router Is Not Secure”
   • How to Secure your Router - What Not To Do

Below, are the notes and reasons covered in the video:

1. WPA2 Personal Wireless Security
Has Not Been Cracked
However can be brute forced
Its why you need a complex password
WPA3 approved and coming out soon

2. Parental Controls

Per Device Controls
Specific Website Blocks
Pause Internet / Schedule
Web Filtering / Proxy (Paid feature, provided by 3rd party vendor)
Should integrate with Open Source block lists

Based On Mac Address/IP address Combo
Mac Address Spoofable - Bypass Controls
IP Address - Request New IP Lease - Bypass Controls
Improve - Make Web Filtering / Blocking on the whole network

3. Guest Network

A form of Network Segmentation
Only works if routing tables is correct (does not route outside of guest network to production/personal network)
Example: Guest Network (192.168.3.1/24) does not allow traffic outside of that network range

4. Automatic Updates

Should quickly resolve any potential vulnerabilities the firmware may have
Provide new features and functionality
On by default or given option
Should always leave on

Bonus
5. Motion Detection (Physical Security)
Based on signal between nodes
Paid features (Linksys Aware)
Schedule time for detection and send notification

Drawbacks
Can’t saw where motion happened in house
No Integrations with other security products

Wouldn’t recommend until improved
Still a cool new use of mesh technology

Other Security Benefits
Different (Direct) Connection Types (ex. Bridge Mode)
Use as Access Point

Bandwidth Prioritization
Great for Streaming TV, Music

Simple Node Integrations (For Mesh)
Overall improved setup for routers

Troubleshooting Assistance
Guidance: Easier for Consumer to fix problems
