Did you know that Ohio is widely known as the Birthplace of Aviation? While the famous first powered flight took place in Kitty Hawk, the real invention and engineering breakthroughs behind the airplane happened in Dayton.
Aviation pioneers Wilbur Wright and Orville Wright designed, built, and perfected their aircraft in Dayton. Their experimental flights and advanced testing took place at Huffman Prairie Flying Field, where they developed the world’s first practical airplane.
One of their greatest achievements, the Wright Flyer III, became the first fully controllable and practical airplane, and it is officially recognized as Ohio’s state airplane.
Ohio proudly celebrates this aviation heritage through state symbols, historical landmarks, and even aviation-themed license plates that remind residents of the state’s pioneering role in flight.
Today, the legacy continues through major aerospace research centers such as the NASA Glenn Research Center and the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The state has also produced more astronauts than almost any other region in the United States.
In this video, we explore:
• Why Ohio is called the Birthplace of Aviation
• How the Wright brothers invented and perfected flight in Dayton
• The historic importance of Huffman Prairie
