How to set up a reference image in 3ds MAX

To properly set a reference image autodesk 3ds Max and avoid any distortion or blurriness you need to create a plane to act as a canvas for the reference image. The plane must be orientated properly and of equal aspect ratio to the image. For example an image of dimensions 480p x 480p has an aspect ratio of 1:1, so the reference image must be placed on a plane that has equal height and width.

Once the plane is set up, you will need to import your reference image to the material panel which can be accessed by using the keyboard shortcut 'm'. You will want to click on the button next to diffuse to open up bitmap which will allow you to import your reference image as a material map. From here apply the material map to the frame and click on show material in viewport to make the reference image appear.
