What is mechatronic engineering?
Mechatronics is an engineering approach that synergistically combines the four main engineering disciplines of Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Control Engineering to produce useful products. Because today's products, especially those requiring high technology, require the combined use of different engineering approaches, the role of Mechatronics Engineering in this regard is undeniable. It's important to emphasize that this department offers a comprehensive educational program designed to develop graduates who shape the future. In other words, studying in this department is like simultaneously mastering three or four different engineering fields. In this respect, it wouldn't be a misplaced analogy to describe graduates as being like Swiss Army knives in the eyes of employers. Of course, a side effect of such a comprehensive education is the sheer difficulty of the department. Ask any graduate today and they'll tell you they struggled mightily while studying in the department.
How did mechatronics originate?
It dates back to the late 1960s. In 1969, an engineer in Japan named Tetsuro Mori laid the foundations for a new field of engineering he called mechatronics, combining mechanics and electricity. This engineering approach was used in autofocus cameras, automatic doors, and welding machines in the 1970s. In the 1980s, the scope of mechatronics was expanded by incorporating microcontrollers into mechanical system designs, marking a significant step forward in the development of industrial robots. From the 1990s onward, significantly advanced networks and internet infrastructures enabled newly designed systems to be connected. Through all of this, the internet of things emerged, and the importance of mechatronics engineering, which played a significant role in this process, has grown steadily and continues to do so. According to research conducted by the United States Department of Labor, the number of jobs in mechatronics engineering will increase rapidly over the next 10 years, and the department has been categorized as "High Impact" and "High Priority" compared to other departments. In other words, with technology advancing so rapidly, the impact and priority of mechatronics as a field of study is undeniable.
