Secrets of the dead is a rough one. Serious amount of Yokai that mob you from the get go. Deal with the umbrellas as a matter of urgency then buff up and get ready for a fight. I use an Odachi purely for its power.
I've always been of the opinion once they're dead they're no longer a threat, but use whatever works best for you.
