In Canada, there are three levels of police services: federal, provincial, and municipal. Canada’s national police force is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), a combined international, federal, provincial, and municipal policing body.
The RCMP enforces laws made under the parliament’s authority throughout the country. They are responsible for the administration of justice within certain provinces.
Today, the RCMP provides the following services:
Law enforcement and investigative services
International policing duties
Criminal intelligence
Technology and support services for the police community
Contract policing service in certain Canadian provinces
The RCMP provides contract policing services in eight provinces and three territories. Ontario and Quebec have their own police agencies: the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the administrative organization of the Safety of Quebec, respectively.
Meanwhile, smaller Canadian cities contract police service from the RCMP. Meanwhile, larger cities have their own force. All the agencies support each other in protecting and defending government officials and citizens.
For example, a hit-and-run suspect took off from the scene of an accident. They drove into another province and out of Ontario. RCMP officers can pursue the suspect on behalf of OPP officers.
If a police officer arrests a suspect, they must follow the proper procedure to protect the accused’s rights. When they arrest or detain somebody, they are required by law to tell the person they have the right to consult a lawyer.
Police officers should inform the accused of the reasons for the arrest and tell them the charge if there is one. Those arrested also have the right to appear before a judge as soon as possible.
