urokirusskogo.ru
Based on the structure and meaning of complex sentences, the following types of subordinate clauses are distinguished:
subject;
predicate;
attributive;
complementary (or explanatory);
adverbial.
The types of subordinate clauses can be correlated with the members of a simple sentence: ~subordinate clauses answer the same questions as the members of a sentence. For example,
[Tell that story], (that Mom loved).
In this sentence, the main clause ~Tell that story,~ the subordinate clause is –~ That Mom loved. Let's pose a question to the subordinate clause: ~Which story? ~– That Mom loved. ~ This is a question of definition. Therefore, we have an attributive subordinate clause.
Let's compare,
Tell Mom's favorite story. This is a simple sentence. Let's pose a question starting with the word "history": ~History ~what kind?~ – Mom's favorite. ~This is a question of definition.
[Nobody knows], (where this river begins).
In this sentence, the main clause ~Nobody knows~ and the subordinate clause ~Where this river begins. Let's pose a question to the subordinate clause: ~Doesn't know ~what?~ – Where this river begins. ~This is a question of object. Therefore, this is a sentence with an additional, or explanatory, subordinate clause.
[The lecture began], (when everyone took their seats)/
In this sentence, the main clause ~The lecture began~ and the subordinate clause ~When everyone took their seats. Let's pose a question to the subordinate clause: ~It began ~when?~ – When everyone took their seats. ~This is a question of circumstance. Therefore, this is a sentence with an adverbial subordinate clause.
