In order to build your very own website you’re going to need a domain name and hosting account.
A domain is simply the URL people type in to find your website while a host is server that store all your website files and serves this to viewers once they type in your domain name.
To register a domain name, head on over to namecheap.com, the link is below. Go down to the search bar and type in the domain you want for your website. Hit search and namecheap will show you if your domain is available. You’ll see a large list of domains with different extensions like .com, .org, .net and many other extensions.
To increase the chance your website will be seen in search results, you’ll want a .com or .net domain as Google seems to give preference to these.
Once you’ve decided on a URL, click the cart button next to the domain. Then click view cart.
Choose how long you’d like to register the domain for. Keep in mind it is theorized that Google gives weight to how long a domain is registered for so longer periods could help improve your rankings in search engines meaning more visitors to your site.
Click auto-renew if you’d like but Namecheap will give you a ton of heads up when your domain is about to expire even if you don’t.
Make sure Whois is enabled! This option hides your personal information like email and phone number from public view so people scraping the web can’t contact you out of the blue. I made the mistake of not getting this for one of my domains, now I get about 3-5 calls a day from website designers, marketing agencies, and scammers trying to sell their services…. So it is worth it!
