Installing Lighting in a Children's Room [No. 115]
I decided to record a short video about changing the bases in ceiling lights.
You might ask why such a procedure might be necessary? You'll find the answer in the video, of course, but in short, when choosing light fixtures for my son's room, we encountered the problem of choosing the right one! It turns out there aren't many light fixtures designed for a 12-volt system. Most fixtures are designed for 220V bulbs, which then convert the voltage to 12V. These bulbs, in my case, have a GU10 base and aren't particularly reliable. Besides, my wiring was already all designed for 12V, so I needed to find a solution, and I found one!
After taking measurements, I concluded that the 12V bulbs I needed with a GU5.3 base were the same diameter and size as 220V bulbs with a GU10 base, so I only needed to replace the base in the fixture. You might ask, why bother? The answer is: the selection of GU5.3 base fixtures is extremely limited, and the fixtures themselves are several times more expensive than their GU10 counterparts. We couldn't find the fixtures we needed that matched the design for 12V, which is why you're watching this video.
