Recreating a $3500 Experience with a Smartphone and Curiosity 🥽

The boundaries between our physical desks and digital workspaces are blurring faster than ever.

Like many, I was captivated by the launch of the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3. The Idea of an infinite, spatial workspace is the future — but as a student, the $3500 price tag felt like a wall.

Driven by pure fascination and a desire to learn, I asked myself "Can I build this experience using the hardware I already own?"

That's how the AR Metaverse (AR WorkSpace) project started. My goal was to democratize spatial computing by turning a standard Android phone and a laptop into a high-end monitor workstation.

The Tech Stack:
To make this work, I dived deep into:
Unity (ARcore/AR foundation) : for spatial anchoring.
WebRTC (Unity Render Streaming) : To achieve the near-zero latency required for a usable desktop.

The Engineering Challenge: The Thermal Wall 🌡️
Building for fascination is one thing; building for usability is another. Quickly hitting a massive hurdle: Heat.
In mobile XR, you aren't just running an app; you are demanding simultaneous high-speed rendering, constant camera polling, and high-frequency sensor data (IMU). This results in a massive flow of current through nearly every component of the SoC. The phone essentially becomes a pocket heater.

To solve this, I tried:
The AR-to-VR Pivot: I experimented with disabling the camera feed to create a VR-like "immersed" workspace. It slowed the heating down, but didn't stop it.
Script Optimization: I spent hours optimizing execution times and draw calls to squeeze every bit of efficiency out of the mobile CPU.

The heating issue persists on standard Android devices, making it difficult for long-term use. But that’s the beauty of engineering—the "failure" is where the real learning happens. I’m still exploring more efficient ways to handle frame rendering and data transmission, driven by the passion to make spatial computing accessible to everyone.

I’d love to hear from fellow XR devs—how do you handle thermal management and power draw in mobile AR/VR? Let's connect!
