Instructions on how to change your name in Michigan under the State laws that allow residents to change their name after marriage, after divorce, or for personal reasons.

Get Fingerprinted. - You will need to go to the closest police station in your area and asked to be fingerprinted. There will be a small fee and you will need to bring a blank Michigan Name Change Petition.
Send Copies. - You will need to send copies of your fingerprints and a name change petition that has been completed along with a check in the amount of $150 payable to the 'State of Michigan'.

Wait. - You will be notified after 8 weeks of your hearing date.
Publication. - According to the State law every new name change must be made public. Which means you will need to publish an ad in the newspaper. The court clerk will guide you to the best newspaper to be in contact.
Publication of Name Change. - After successful publication you will receive a Publication of Name Change which is the official document that proves you in fact advertised your new name.
Hearing. - You will receive your name change decree after a successful hearing and paying a fee of $10. This will be the official certificate for changing your name at any private or public institution.
