Forest Floor - Humus Form Orders Part 1
How are humus forms different under deciduous and coniferous trees? Dr. Margaret Schmidt (SFU) tells you about the organisms and properties of two samples in part 1 of The Humus Form Orders. Maple and alder impact the forest floor quite differently than douglas fir and western hemlock. Primarily fungal decomposition under the coniferous trees causes a dense matted structure, like a carpet. Plenty of soil fauna, like earthworms, have mixed the organic material under the deciduous trees with mineral soil, forming a thick Ah horizon.
