In this episode, we go deeply into the design and layout of my performance instrument. I start by discussing the personal nature of modular layout, and how it contributes to expressivity and fluidity in performance. Then I create a list features that I want, and a second list of features that are nice-to-have. I break down modular synthesis into a series of systems, and then discuss where I'm going to locate those systems in my case.
We discuss the inspiration that the modular artist Steevio has on my design choices, and touch on his music and design aesthetics. Then, we use Modular Grid to first create a rough layout of the location of the systems, and then to focus in by laying out the modules themselves.
We weigh the pros and cons of onboard vs external mixers, touch on using 1U rows for utility modules, and look at my potential interface solution for connecting the modular to the outside world.
