During this engineering design challenge "Build a Prototype Prosthetic Hand" teachers are given the task of designing, building, and testing a prosthetic hand using readily available materials that can lift up a paper cup. An added bonus is if mass can be added to the cup. The lesson is inquiry-based, and also directly aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards. Teachers first analyze a variety of models of human hands, arms etc. then they brainstorm what materials they will use to build their hand. Groups incorporate the engineering design process throughout the challenge. This lesson would most likely take up to 3 days of class time to complete, possibly 4-5 days. When this challenge/lesson is implemented within the classroom students: develop and strengthen 21st century skills, expand life science, physical science, and engineering knowledge. The lesson can be a introduction to making more sophisticated 3-D workable prosthetic hands such as the models that are made worldwide by students and groups throughout the world via E-nable organization.
