Video games used to be funny. From GTA, Portal, and Borderlands, to modern AAA releases that barely crack a smile... Along the way, something changed. Throughout the video game industry, we saw less and less good jokes being made. Instead, video game writers would opt for lazy, safe "comedy". In this video essay, I break down the reasons for the all the cringe humor in video games, and whether comedy still has a place in today’s industry.
