knowing when to turn back | Hiking in the Scottish Highlands | Winter Van Life Scotland
We are now travelling the west coast of the Scottish Highlands for our van trip in this video, slowly exploring the coast and hills. The Scottish weather has been relentlessly windy and rainy so far. Hiking in winter in the Highlands can be beautiful but at times very difficult in our experiences, with a lot of plan changes! We have had to stick to low ground for hikes and for a few days due to the winds and thick cloud.
But for these two days the weather forecast was for clear and sunny weather with moderate winds. So we decided to make the most of it and hike some mountains and ridges. But both days were a bit of a fail for the ridge hikes, due to severe winds and a vertigo attack!

It's not so much about the highest mountain or getting the best view but about just enjoying the journey along the way and noticing small wonders in the wild 🌿

Brochan and I are travelling around Scotland with our dog Floss in our self converted VW T4. Taking in the Caingorms, rugged coastline, white beaches and endless mountains of the Highlands! Of course there has been the typical winter weather to contend with, some days have been van bound, hiding from the wind and rain. But we have also had some amazing hikes and beautifully sunny days :)

I just wanted to say a quick note about the Hardergrat trail. I got the pronunciation totally wrong in the video, my memory is terrible and I had no service to check exactly what the name was! I also said along the lake in Interlaken but that was wrong also, the town is Interlaken but the lake that the ridge runs along is actually Lake Brienz. So, I'm sorry for getting the names so wrong!
