The Holiday Inn Ashford - Central was closed to the public and used exclusively by the Home Office from October 2022 until June 2026.
Before reopening to paying guests on 1st July 2026, the hotel underwent a full refurbishment. During this explore I documented the condition of the building and the extensive works that had been carried out throughout.
The hotel operators have also begun rehiring local staff ahead of reopening.
Having operated under a Home Office contract for more than 3½ years, the total payments made to the hotel operators are estimated to run well into the millions.
Under standard Home Office accommodation contracts, hotels are typically required to be returned to their previous commercial standard at the end of the agreement through a “handback” or “reversion to status” clause. The refurbishment costs are therefore ultimately funded through the contract rather than a separate direct payment at the end.
🎥 Solo stealth explore.
