Shadow play, shadow theatre, is a two-dimensional form of puppetry created by projecting movable or stationary flat figures or bodies onto a screen. The figures are held behind the screen in a light channel, so that the audience perceives only their moving shadows as the theatrical performance. The figures are opaque or transparent (with colored interiors) and made of paper, cardboard, plastics, parchment, leather, wood, or tin. Candles, oil and kerosene lamps, or electric light serve as the projection light source. The screen consists of a paper, parchment, glass, or fabric surface.
