What is MAC address and why we need it.

A MAC Address also known as Media Access Control address is a 12-digit hardware serial number burned directly into your device's network chip.

While your IP address changes every time you join a new Wi-Fi,

your MAC address is the only way the router knows exactly which physical machine is requesting that suspicious videos.

It uses the Manufacturer ID.

The first six digits of your MAC address actually tell you who made the device, Apple, Intel, or Samsung.

Because these addresses are globally unique, your router uses them to play traffic cop.

When data arrives at your house, the router looks at the "Destination MAC" to ensure your private messages go to your phone and not your roommate’s laptop.

But in 2026, privacy has changed the game.

Because a static MAC address makes it easy for malls and airports to track your movement,

modern iPhones and Androids now use MAC Randomization.

They generate a "fake" hardware ID for every network you join, so you can’t be followed from the coffee shop to the grocery store.

Luckily you can still use the real MAC address for Security Filtering at home, like blocking your kid’s gaming console after 8 PM.
