Crochet can be used not only to crochet large and small items for various purposes, but also to tie edges, creating a border. After tying, the item always takes on a finished look, and the border adds a special sophistication.

Crochet Borders: What Items Are They Used For?

Crochet borders can be made in various styles and widths, depending on the design. Using a crochet hook, you can liven up a simple knitted or sewn item, making an ordinary piece more interesting: a border adds exclusivity and a festive touch.

Crochet borders are appropriate for the following items:

kerchiefs, scarves, shawls, handkerchiefs;
dresses, blouses;
skirts;
sleeves;
towels, tablecloths;
bedspreads, capes, etc.

Crochet edging is done both around the perimeter of the garment, as if in a circle, and laterally, especially when using a scalloped border. Openwork edging can feature any motif formed by alternating double crochet stitches with full or partial filling – geometric patterns, flowers, leaves, etc.

Using a crochet hook, a crocheter can lengthen a short dress, blouse, or sleeves by adding a border around the edge, or reduce the appearance of an overly wide neckline by creating a beautiful border around the neckline.

What yarns are used for crocheting edgings?

The yarn should be chosen to give the finished product an exclusive and elegant look. The following yarns are used for crocheting edgings:

wool, semi-wool;
cotton, linen;
Viscose;
man-made and blended fibers.

If the item is intended to be delicate and lacy, then fine threads are used, regardless of the yarn composition. When crocheting a border on a finished item (it could be knitted or sewn from fabric), the thickness and color of the thread for the border are chosen so that the border does not look too coarse or too thin.

There are no restrictions on the color of the crochet border: it's a matter of the needleworker's taste. Originally intended to be lacy, the bordered item is usually made in a single color, but it's possible to crochet the border in the same color scheme or use a contrasting color scheme. The important thing is that the border looks appropriate and organic.
