The focus of today’s video is to give you guys a handful of tips and tricks to make your 808 and kick work together in your mix.
Before you focus on these tips and tricks, you NEED to make sure you have these things right.
1. Sound Selection. If you have the wrong kick and 808 you can mix all day and accomplish nothing. Pick the right sounds so you’re not losing the battle from the start.
2. Leveling. Get your levels right before your do any processing.
3. Make sure your 808s cut off one another and don’t overlap.
4. Make sure your instruments are EQ’d to remove unnecessary low end that might interfere with your kick and 808.
After you accomplish these things, think about WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. Whats bothering your ear? What is it about the kick and 808 that’s not working together?
A handful of tips and tricks to try and resolve any outstanding issues between your 808 and kick:
1. Trim tail of your 808. Make the sample decay quicker by trimming the tail. It will create a more dynamic sound and the 808 and kick hits will play off each other in a lot more dynamic and interesting way. Not all songs call for this, use it in the context of your song.
2. EQ below 20 hz in your 808. You’d be surprised how much it helps your 808 and kick work together.
3. Try adjusting the PITCH of your kick and 808 to match one another.
4. Try adjusting the SPEED of the sample. Speed up an 808 or slow down a pick. Try doing the opposite. Adjusting the speed of samples can really make them work in the context of your song.
5. Consider cutting unnecessary high end from your kick or 808.
6. Try to side chain your 808 and kick so that the 808 ducks the kick.
7. Adjust the attack of your 808 using an ADSR knob or transient designer to reduce attack of 808 and let the transient of the kick punch thru the mix.
8. Try putting your kick and 808 in mono. It doesn’t have to be 100% in mono.. play around with it. One thing I would NOT recommend doing is putting any low end elements in stereo.
