Grenache has three homes: Spain (where it's called Garnacha), southern France, and increasingly, McLaren Vale in South Australia. Today we're tasting six flagship Grenache wines from McLaren Vale's top producers to see if this region really is the future of the variety.
In Memory of Pete Fraser:
As we celebrate McLaren Vale Grenache, we want to acknowledge Pete Fraser, the visionary winemaker behind Yangarra, who sadly passed away recently. Pete was instrumental in elevating McLaren Vale Grenache to world-class status and his legacy lives on in every bottle. His dedication to whole bunch winemaking, organic viticulture, and showcasing what this region can do has inspired an entire generation of winemakers. Rest in peace, Pete. Your impact on Australian wine is immeasurable.
What Is Grenache?
One of the great grape varieties of the world. Traditionally grown in hot climates, known for red fruit flavors, silky tannins, and when done right, incredible elegance and structure. McLaren Vale's sandy soils and warm Mediterranean climate make it a perfect home for Grenache.
Our Reactions:
Brendan bought dozens of almost everything
The variety in style shocked us - from carbonic-style light reds to structured, age-worthy wines
Tannin levels were surprisingly high across the board
Identity and regionality were clear throughout
Key Takeaway:
McLaren Vale Grenache isn't homogeneous. There's incredible variety in style from the same region, same grape, same vintage. From $40 elegant sippers to $110 age-worthy collectibles, these wines showed what the region can do.
The Debate:
We disagreed on favorites. Some preferred the light, elegant, sloshy styles. Others wanted power, structure, and ageability. But everyone agreed - these wines have serious identity.
The McLaren Vale Advantage:
Sandy soils (particularly Blewitt Springs)
Warm Mediterranean climate
"Where the sea meets the vines"
Old vines producing concentrated fruit
Is McLaren Vale the future of Grenache? After tasting these six wines, it's hard to argue against it. The region is producing world-class Grenache with clear identity, incredible variety in style, and serious aging potential. Pete Fraser's legacy continues to inspire this incredible region.
