History:
As you probably know, Turris OS (Turris Operating System, or TOS) is running on all Turris devices. It stands on the popular #Linux distribution called #OpenWrt with our software, additional modifications, and improvements, such as #TurrisSentinel (attack detection & prevention system), Updating system, #PaKon (traffic monitoring), NetMetr, #VPN services, and so on.
OpenWrt by itself is open-source – in other words, developed and reviewed by many professionals from all over the world. As with other Turris products, it means that the community (and, of course, you) can influence its future. For example, you can request a feature on our forum/GitLab or report a bug. By the way, we really appreciate users feedback and contributions!
OpenWrt has its own administration interface called LuCI (or Lucy). LuCI is not very friendly and may scare a novice user. Back in the days, when Turris was a research project, there was no administration interface at all, it was just a Wizard. You know, just a quick internet setup thing. But with time and more code written, it transformed into Foris - administration interface.
The name "Foris" has Latin origins and means "a door, a gate or an entrance". Foris is a previous web administration interface and is available on almost all Turris routers, the exception is Turris Shield.
Originally, Foris was written using technologies that, unfortunately, were dead ends and almost ceased to exist. Such as Compass (Ruby CSS framework) a Bottle (Python micro web-framework). The latest Foris is written mostly in Python, Vanilla JS, and custom Css styles. Which then led to inconsistencies in UI, problems with code maintenance, bad support of modules/plugins, and responsivity on mobile phones. So we have decided to rewrite it using modern, widely used standard web technologies.
reForis, our next-generation, redesigned (Foris) user administration interface, is available on #TurrisOS 5 and above including #TurrisOmnia, Turris Shield, Turris MOX, and on Turris 1.x (after opt-in migration to TOS 5.x). reForis is written in React.js, Flask, and Bootstrap framework (with Bootswatch theme "Flatly" and Turris primary color).
Currently, we recommend using reForis on all Turris devices, because we will get rid of Foris soon and reForis will replace it. So you can help us with testing :-)!
