Stand by Me
“Stand By Me” … a new solo piano arrangement of the well-known song from the early 1960s.
This song has some interesting history behind it. It was written by Ben E King in collaboration with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. King had been a member of the Drifters and wrote the song for them, never intending to perform it solo. However, the Drifters passed on the song, so he recorded and released it in 1961.
To date, there are over 400 different recordings of King’s song, including versions by Otis Redding, John Lennon, Muhammad Ali, Tracy Chapman, musicians of the Playing for Change project, Florence and the Machine, the Fugees, a duet featuring Lady Gaga with Sting, the Kingdom Choir, etc. In addition to charting in the top 10 throughout the world, it was: voted one of the Songs of the Twentieth Century by the RIAA, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, named by Rolling Stones in its list of the 500 most influential pieced of music of all time, earned the Towering Song award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame (plus earned King a Towering Performance award), inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress, as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant", used as a brand song for Levis’ 501 jeans, used as the theme song for the 1985 film of the same title, etc.
The history behind it though is rooted in Gospel Music. King stated that he was inspired by the gospel hymn written by Charles Albert Tindley of the same title. He also stated he was inspired by another gospel song by J. W. Alexander titled “Stand by Me Father”. Stoller said that while King and Lieber had the words and initial melody well underway, he, Stoller, worked out the harmony and came up with the signature bass motif that became forever identified with the song.
King passed away in 2015 and, the Drifters finally recorded a version of this song and released it on an album in tribute to his life and artistry.
It is a great song with powerful lyrics, and a prime example of the Soul Music genre.
MUSIC INSIGHTS:
This song uses only 4 chords – the main three major triadic chords of whatever major scale it is being performed in plus the minor 6th chord of that scale. These are repeated for every line in the verse and chorus. There are no additional chords used and never any significant harmonic modifications to these basic chords.
In terms of melody, the same is true: essentially the melody repeats the same motif over and over again with only one or two slight variations. There is a very strong ostinato bass that is also repeated again and again.
All that simple structure makes the song very easy to identify and relatively easy to sing. Combined with its strong love song lyrics, it is easy to understand the popularity of this song.
In my arrangement, I treat the melody as a theme for a set of variations. I also decided not to use the entire ostinato bass but instead combine some of its elements with a counter melody. I left the harmony largely unchanged, with only the occasional transition note added.
VIDEO INSIGHTS:
The lyrics speak of the darkness of night with only the possibility of moonlight. They then speak to the strength that comes from a strong love-based partnership to counter the vulnerability most people feel when alone on such a night. The video scenes were chosen and set to the music to reflect the sense of the original lyrics.

“Stand By Me” was arranged, performed, and recorded at the Cedars Studio in early May 2024 using Ableton Live with final instrument voices from sample libraries of Spitfire Audio and Native Instruments. The post processing and master mix was done with iZotope Ozone 9.
